Decision Making & Aging Study – Tucson, AZ

Eligibility Requirements:

Healthy individuals who are:

  • within one of the two age groups: 18-30 OR 65-74
  • able to come to our lab for five sessions spread over several weeks (flexible to your schedule)
  • willing to participate in 1 MRI and 2 brain stimulation sessions

About the Study:

The Decision Making & Aging Study involves participants coming into the lab on five separate occasions for neuropsychological testing, a decision making battery, functional and structural MRI, and two transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) sessions for stimulation of the target or control stimulation site. The clinical trial component concerns only the last two sessions where subjects will be randomly assigned to different groups to receive different TMS interventions.

An Institutional Review Board responsible for human subjects research at The University of Arizona reviewed this research project and found it to be acceptable, according to applicable state and federal regulations and University policies designed to protect the rights and welfare of participants in research.

Purpose:

This study aims to better understand how decision making changes with age.

What is Involved:

The sessions and approximate time taken are presented below.

  1. Cognitive testing (2 hours)
  2. Computer tasks (1 hour)
  3. Brain scan while completing a task. (2 hours)
  4. - 5. Brief brain stimulation (transcranial magnetic stimulation) followed by completing a decision making task (1-2hours)

Participants may receive up to $200 for their participation.
